Strathcona, named after Lord Strathcona, became part of Edmonton in 1912 and offers residents a vibrant community near the University of Alberta and the scenic river valley.
Strathcona, a neighbourhood rich in history, was named in honour of Lord Strathcona, the Governor of the Hudson Bay Company from 1889 to 1914, who played a significant role in Canadian history by driving the "last spike" of the CPR transcontinental railway. Officially amalgamated with Edmonton in 1912, Strathcona has since evolved into a lively community that boasts close proximity to Old Strathcona, the University of Alberta, and the beautiful outdoor spaces of the river valley.
Since its official boundary was established on October 1, 1981, Strathcona has continued to thrive, attracting residents who appreciate its unique blend of heritage and modern amenities within the Papastew ward.
